The Fiji Airways Fijian 7s team will need to maintain discipline and keep their shape in the first tournament of the 2019/20 World Sevens Series in Dubai on Friday.

Coach Gareth Baber emphasised the need to maintaining their structure when they take on Japan at 4.02 am.

“We will keep on with the same thing that we had been doing all season long that is to have consistency in attack and defence,” he said.

“The boys will have to keep their shape in areas of the game and minimize giving away penalties and avoid getting cards.

“We will be working on combinations that we have built on during the off-season.”

Baber added the team needed to focus on maintaining the style of rugby they play.

“It’s all about creating and keeping momentum and the rhythm,” he said.

“We need to focus on these areas so we can have a good start and it is very important because it is the first game of the series.

“It is important to get a win so it sets a platform for the rest of the series.”

“The team will need to focus on a few concern areas that let us down in last season quarter-final against USA.

These areas are:

  • Wrong options- the need to focus when on the decision making process during pressure time.
  • Discipline- we need to avoid yellow and red cards.
  • Mis-tackles- first up tackles needed to ground ball carrier.
