A-G’s Conference: Panel Focuses On Medicinal Marijuana

Medicinal marijuana will be the focus of a panel discussion at the 21st Attorney-General’s Conference today.

Held at the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa in Natadola Bay, the panel brings together international and local medical and law experts to present on the topic: “Need for Weed? Legal Medicinal Marijuana”.

Panellists include Dr Joseph Rosado, the chief executive officer at the International Medical Consultants Inc, United States of America; Merrin Mason, the chief executive officer Victorian Law Reform Commission, Australia; and Dr Kenton Biribo, anaesthesiologist, Fiji National University.

The Conference

The A-G’s Conference has grown significantly over the past 21 years with an increasing number of attendees and the nature of topics covered during discussions.

In his opening address yesterday, Acting Chief Justice Kamal Kumar said: “In terms of numbers, I am told the first conference had about 50 attendees, which has now increased to 478.

“It is interesting and encouraging to note attendance by private legal practitioners. This is a sign of healthy legal system that we have in place.

“Irrespective of whether you are in private or public practice, you all have a duty to treat each other with courtesy and respect.

“I am sure that over the next two days you will build new friendships and be able to exchange views on areas of concern.”

Going paperless

Justice Kumar said Fiji’s Judicial Department was in the process of “implementing e-filing of Court documents as part of Access to Justice Project sponsored by the European Union and managed by UNDP (United Nations Development Programme).”

He thanked the European Union and the UNDP for their assistance and cooperation.
