President, Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote says Fiji is the second country in the world to stage a fashion show where the designers are female inmates.

He adds male inmates also have been given the opportunity to further develop, improve their skills and gain an income generating capacity.

President Konrote made these remarks at the opening of the Christmas Vakaviti Art Exhibition on Thursday.

“I am certain that if you critically scrutinise some of the art works on display, you can immediately detect and recognise that there is a deeper meaning to their work,” he said.

“There is definitely a story to tell – very often as I have noticed, a sad story of hardship, struggle, rejection, but in the end, hope, forgiveness and acceptance.”

He said the programme was designed to help inmates to inculcate in them self-discipline, commitment and a sense of pride and achievement.

President Konrote commended the female inmates for the fine display of clothes and garments that they designed and sewed.

“Again this is another ideal opportunity for female inmates to showcase their talents, which in some cases would have been developed at home, but more recently within the confines of the Corrections Service Institution,” President Konrote said.
