Six trucks were the last to be seen carting cane to the Labasa sugar mill before it was officially closed on Thursday afternoon.

This marks the end of the 2019 crushing season.

Sounding the horn and fireworks to celebrate another successful crushing season as it works it’s way back to recovery.

Chief Guest at the closing ceremony, Tui Nadogo, Ratu Ilisanita Malodali tipped the cane truck at around 5.45pm.

He said that the mill had the blessings of the vanua.

In a statement Fiji Sugar Corporation stated that Labasa had crushed 95 per cent of its total budgeted cane supply.

Had it not been for the disruption of adverse weather at week 24, the mill would have completed its crushing season a week ago.

Mill manager Michael Faktaufon thanked and acknowledged all the stakeholders for their support and contribution towards Labasa’s success.

“We have crossed our target of 661,000 tonnes of cane, which means that we have surpassed 2018 and 2016 crop production,” Mr Faktaufon said.

“We have produced 64,999 tonnes of sugar and that is a great achievement for the Labasa mill.

“Should everything go well with the last crush we will reach 662,000 tonnes of cane,” he said.

He added that there was a drop in 2013 at 500,000 tonnes and on its road to recovery, the mill crushed 620,000 tonnes of sugarcane in 2018 and as of yesterday, 655,000 tonnes of sugarcane was crushed.

The mill will resume next year.
