A young woman from Navosa is believed to be the latest road fatality, taking the road death toll to 57 deaths so far this year.

In comparison, 65 people lost their lives on our roads last year.

The deceased has been identified as Vasiti Velala, a school teacher at Ratu Nemani Memorial School in Momi, Nadroga.

A close friend and former class mate at Fulton College, Angie Teriinoho described Vasiti as someone who was always happy.

“We were very close toward our final year at  University.”

Ms Teriinoho is from Tuvalu and studied Bachelor of Education with the late Vasiti.

“All I remember is that she was a good sister. Her favourite word in my language is taina, which means sister.”

Fiji Police Force, in a statement, said the victim, on Wednesday, was a passenger of a vehicle who was on her way to Korolevu in Navosa when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road into a drain.

Police investigations are continuing. A post mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of the victim’s death. Charges have yet to be laid.

The Fiji Sun has learned that Ms Velala was a former student at Fulton College.

Her friends from across the Pacific are devastated to learn of her demise on social media.
