A 28-year-old fisherman from Nailaga, Ba, still cannot believe that he had surfaced a huge grouper or ‘Kawakawa’ from the Ba River last Friday.

The fish was more than two meters in length and weighed close to a hundred kilograms.

Semise Gadele who was having a hard time trying to contribute something to a family gathering, had his prayers answered while out fishing.

Last Friday morning, he had his fishing line tied up to a tree near the Ba Riverbank. When he returned after mid-day he saw that the line had broken off and set out the search for his line on a small punt made up of corrugated iron.

“Once I saw the other end of the line, I tried pulling it but the fish fought back and we battled for at least an hour. The fish also dragged me and my punt for more than two kilometers.”

He never sells his catch of the day and the big fish was handed over to a feast at the family gathering.

The last time someone from the village caught a large grouper was in 2016.
