Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) vehicle drivers in Suva’s Central Business District (CBD) would not need to go away from town to have their vehicle’s LPG refilled.

This follows the recent opening of the new City Central Auto Gas station at the upper corner of MacArthur street in Suva.

According to company owner Mike Shaw, the autogas station is the only one operating in Suva’s CBD to date.

Mr Shaw also the owns  Splash N Dash car wash situated at the same location.

The car wash has been operating since its opening in August 2018.

City Central Auto Gas station

Mr Shaw said the idea of opening an AutoGas station in Suva’s CBD came after the last one closed in January 2018.

“The last LPG Auto Gas station that was in the city was the one in Raojibhai Patel Street Suva,” Mr. Shaw said.

“That closed down in January last year when I was working with Fiji Gas, so there was basically no other LPG Auto Gas station in Suva’s CBD.

“I had also noticed that when it rains, the car wash business is usually slow and sometimes we don’t get business at all,” he said.

“So it was then when I thought that I could actually venture into starting my own autogas station business.”

He said for the gas station, the infrastructure and everything about its installation was done by Blue Gas.

“The only thing that I look after is its maintenance, the manpower that operates it as I pay them and I also look into the security of the station.

“In all those, I do get a certain percentage of the earnings that I get from vehicle owners who use the services here.”

He said Blue Gas had approximately invested close to $200, 000 in the autogas station.

He added that he employs three staff for the autogas station while nine are the car wash.

Opening hours

The autogas station opens from 8 am to 10 pm daily and there are plans to have it operating for 24 hours once the demand increases.

“This might happen in the next three months, I might run 24 hours on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

“The feedback has been great and we hope to continue to build on that.”

Splash N Dash car wash

Mr Shaw said his car wash business was doing well despite the competition from other car wash businesses in Suva’s CBD.

“I had actually opened the car wash in August last year and it has been operating for over a year now.

“There have been some challenges, just like other businesses but we have been able to see through every challenge as I have emphasized the importance of service delivery with my staff.

“Car wash business is all about service, the better you serve your customers, you clean their cars well, you are polite and friendly, they will come back.

“For our customers, their vehicles are their assets, they buy cars, they bring it in and we clean it nicely, they will come back.”

He said they have regular customers like the Fiji Rugby Union, embassies, diplomatic vehicles, and many others.

He attributes this to efficient customer service.

Mr Shaw said while there are no plans on expanding into other business ventures soon, there are certain opportunities he is currently exploring for the future.
