Prabhu Dai is a heartbroken mother. Her son, Manish Singh, was the driver of the car involved in a fatal accident in Nabukavesi on Monday afternoon.

“He didn’t tell us where he was going,” Mrs Dai sobbed.

The car driven by Manish was involved in a head-on collision with a bus travelling towards Suva.

Manish’s family is still trying to come to terms with his death. Also deceased is his girlfriend, who was sitting in the front seat of the car. Her brother, who was in the back, is in critical condition in hospital.

According to Mrs Dai, Manish said he was going to Nadi on Monday morning.

“I told him to go straight to work and drop the idea of going to Nadi,” she said.

“He works as a technician for a fire service company and he was supposed to go to work.”

Salochna Devi, Manish’s cousin, said they were called by police and informed on Monday afternoon of the accident.

She said they were not aware that he was travelling to Nadi with his girlfriend and her brother.

“They were going to pick the mother of his girlfriend who was arriving from abroad,” she said.

“He had never introduced this girl to the family and we were unaware that their relationship had gone so far.

“And the car, which he was driving, did not belong to him. He does not own a car.”

Manish celebrated his 21st birthday in June this year. His family is from Labasa. Aunt, Kala Wati had looked after him since he was eight months old. She said no word could describe her pain when she heard the news.

She said her last conversation with Manish was on Sunday evening. Manish’s funeral will take place today at his home in Valelevu. Police are yet to charge anyone in this case.
