No Compensation Payout For Drunk Drivers

There will be no compensation payout for drivers involved in accidents, who are under the influence of alcohol or narcotics, says the chief executive officer for the Accident Compensation Commission of Fiji.

“If someone involved in an accident is under the influence of alcohol or drugs, if he loses his life or gets injured, then he is excluded from the compensation,” Parvez Akbar said during the launch of the road safety campaign at the Land Transport Authority office yesterday.

“There will be no compensation paid out to him or in the case of death, to his family.”

Mr Akbar said other payout exclusions for drivers included driving without a licence, and driving with a licence not meant for the category of vehicle involved in the accident.

He said the compensation would be paid to parents whose children were part of road accidents and in cases where children have run across the road and there is a degree of parental negligent.

“Our first payment was made when a child ran across the road in Khalsa Road. The scheme is a no-fault scheme, the idea is to compensate victims of accidents without going to court and fighting insurance companies and not have to prove fault,” he said.
