Court Hands Down 14-Year Sentence For Child Trafficking

In a first of its kind, the Suva High Court today (12.12.19) sentenced a transgender individual to 14 years imprisonment for trafficking a 15-year-old girl for sexual services.

In a first of its kind, the Suva High Court today (12.12.19) sentenced a transgender individual to 14 years imprisonment for trafficking a 15-year-old girl for sexual services.

Josevata (Josie) Werelagi was charged and convicted of one count of aggravated sexual servitude and three counts of domestic trafficking of children.

Between 18 and 22 July 2015, Josevata (Josie) Werelagi facilitated the transportation of a 15- year-old girl from Nausori to Suva and forced her into providing sexual services to paying customers.

Justice Daniel Goundar sentenced Josevata (Josie) Werelagi to 14 years imprisonment for one count of aggravated sexual servitude and three counts of domestic trafficking in children.

The sentences are to be served concurrently.

A non-parole period of 10 years has been imposed.
