Maritime islanders who live and work in the urban areas are now making their way to their respective villages.

In Suva, many people from the Lau Group were seen boarding the Princess Moana on Monday, bound for their villages to spend their Christmas and New Year holidays.

Ogea villager Soko Vakacegu told Island Beat that she had not been to her home island for the past 19 years.

“I am really happy to be spending Christmas at home because I have a lot of catching-up to do with my family members and other relatives,” she said.

Ms Vakacegu said the fare to Ogea is $110 one way.

Asinate Kotoirewa, from Muanicake Village in Fulaga, is returning to her island home after 10 years.

“I’m really looking forward to meeting my relatives, after 10 years of being away from them,” she said.

She works and lives at Plantation Island Resort. Ms Kotoirewa said she was told that the trip to Fulaga would be 32 hours.

From Fulaga the Princess Moana will head for Ogea to drop off passengers, and then to Kabara for its last stop before returning to Suva on Sunday.

The vessel had 190 passengers on board for the trip.
