A 40-year-old bus driver who is alleged to have caused the death of a man and a woman on Monday has been granted bail.

Navin Lal appeared before Magistrate Thushara Thennakoon in the Magistrates Court in Navua yesterday.

Lal is charged with two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death and one count of dangerous driving. The alleged incident took place at Nabukavesi along Queens Highway.

The Legal Aid lawyer told the court that she would make an oral bail application and sought bail on the grounds that the accused was innocent until proven guilty, the medical condition of the accused was stated in the medical report, the accused had a previous good character and it was his first case.

The Police prosecution objected to the bail on the grounds that the accused was charged with two counts of serious charges and that the matter was of public interest because two lives were lost from the alleged incident.

Despite that argument, Lal was granted bail on strict bail conditions.

He was ordered to report to Navua Police Station every Friday.

The matter has been adjourned for mention on February 6, 2020.Edited by Naisa Koroi
