Serai Marama was in tears yesterday when she learned that she was the only student who received three awards during the Sangam Institute of Technology (SIT) College of Nursing and Health Care Education graduation.

The 26-year-old of Soa, Nakorotubu, in the Province of Ra, who was among 110 graduates at the Labasa Civic Centre, was surprised to receive the Excellence in Nursing Knowledge and Mental health; Excellence in Personal Professional development and research; Overall Academic Excellence awards.

“I dedicate my success to my five-year-old son, Jone Banuve, mother Rosa Nakalevu, late father Beniamino Kakaivalu, fiancée, lecturers of my colleagues and friends,” Ms Marama said.

“During my three years of study seeing my son motivated me to do my best so that I can provide the best for him.

“I am my father’s only daughter and his last wish was for me to complete my education. Even during his last days, he volunteered to look after my son.

“Today (Wednesday), I feel so sad because my father can’t see me graduate. I always wanted to become a nurse since I was a kid because I like helping people.

“It gives me great pleasure to bring smiles on patients’ faces.
