Fiji Sun senior journalist Fonua Talei learned Chinese and covered international events as part of the 10-month China Asia Pacific Press Centre (CAPPC) training programme for Asia-Pacific journalists .

The intensive programme includes courses at the journalism school at Beijing’s Renmin University – one of the most prestigious in China – and Beijing International Chinese College.

Ms Talei also had the opportunity to do an internship at a leading international television organisation in Beijing, China Global Television Network (CGTN).

While in China, Ms Talei was based at the China Asia Pacific Press Centre and hosted by the China Public Diplomacy Association.

Ms Talei is the second Fiji Sun journalist to be part of the programme. In 2018, Lusiana Tuimaisala also graduated from the 10-month programme. Her internship was with Chinese Investor magazine. Ms Tuimaisala was the first Pacific Islands journalist to be selected for the programme.

Fiji Sun Publisher/CEO Peter Lomas said this was an outstanding programme. It combined course work at an elite journalism school, internships at leading news organisations and the opportunity to cover major events with mentoring from experienced trainers.

As well, participants networked and developed lasting connections with other emerging senior journalists from the Asia-Pacific region taking part in the programme.

Mr Lomas thanked the Chinese Embassy in Suva, the China Asia Pacific Press Centre and the China Public Diplomacy Association for making it possible.
