Bulou Lele Vereivalu’s plan to attend her grandmother’s funeral in Suva was disrupted after their three-bedroom house at the Civil Aviation Compound at Namaka, Nadi, was destroyed by a fire yesterday morning.

The mother of five, who works for the Fiji Airport Air Traffic Controllers, said: “I was having breakfast when I saw smoke coming out of the bedroom. I went towards it when I saw the room engulfed in fire. I called everybody that there was fire for them to come and help out.

“We tried to use the hosepipe but the water pressure was low. People were coming and we called out to them to call for the fire authority because all our phones was destroyed in the fire,” she said.

“We were preparing to go to Suva for my grandmother’s funeral and everybody was looking forward to it. But we didn’t expect it to turn out this way. Even though the fire fighters came but everything was completely destroyed. We are lucky that no one’s life has been taken and we were all saved.”

Ms Vereivalu lives with her five children and her brother-in-law’s family in the house.

A statement from the National Fire Authority (NFA) said the Nadi Fire Station was alerted of the fire at 10:39am. It said the fire is believed to have started from one of the rooms when people were still inside the house. There were no casualties as everyone escaped safely.

NFA is continuing its investigations into the cause of the fire.
