The World Schools 7s competition is a good platform to develop young players going up Fiji Rugby Union’s pathways, says Fijian Under-18 men’s team head coach Masi Saqanivere.

Three Fijian sides participated in the competition held over the weekend in Auckland, New Zealand, for the first time since inception four years ago.

They included the Fiji Under-18 men’s and women’s teams, and the Rugby Academy Fiji side coached by Seremaia Bai.

The teams arrived back into the country on Saturday evening, having gained crucial exposure during the annual competition.

Saqanivere said he was satisfied with men’s team’s performance, whole women’s head coach Koli Sewabu said his side performed above expectations.

Saqanivere said: “As we all know that this was the first time for the under-18 Fijian team to go and compete at the competition which has been running for four years now. But I believe the boys did well as first timers. We achieved our objective.”

“The tournament is a good platform for the players, especially in developing players going up the Fiji rugby pathway.

“We are hoping for good results next year considering the under-17 players who are the majority, who made up the under 18 team this year.”

Sewabu said: “With 32 teams around the world involved this year, it was a huge learning experience for men and women’s teams who were first timers on an international level.

“For girls and women, this is a pathway for them into the Fijiana 7s and XV team. So I think the huge learning would take place from it.”
