Break-ins in parked vehicles are becoming an issue for many vehicle owners who park across from Damodar City and Sports City in Laucala Bay, Suva.

Cars parked along Varani Road and Telau Street, off Grantham Road have been broken into and items left inside the vehicle stolen.

There have also been similar incidents at the ANZ Stadium car park.

Varani Street resident William Naicker said cars parked along the street are not guarded by security officers, unlike the two malls.

“There is no security here. People parking here do it at their own risk. Some people do not want to pay, while some do not have the patience to look for parking spaces in the malls,” he said.

“And sad to say there are people out here who will steal from others instead of working hard.”

Sailesh Pala, a Suva businessman and keen sports enthusiast, had his vehicle broken into twice.

“My car was parked at ANZ Stadium and I had gone to play soccer at the hockey turf. Electronic devices and money were stolen,” he said.

“I have stopped bringing my car and now ride my motorbike to play.”

According to concerned citizens, they have taken the awareness to social media.

Some claim that perpetrators are teenagers and some even as young as nine years old, who move around in groups of two and four.

Police say they have received reports of break-ins in the area.

They are advising people to park their vehicles in locations which are safe and guarded.
