Villagers of Nasolo in Solevu, Bua, have followed the Government’s tree planting initiative.

Last week, they planted 50 vesi (intsia bijuga), 50 teak, 200 vanilla and 50 coconut plants.

Village headman Jone Bureta said they also planted trees on the banks of the two rivers running beside the village to prevent erosion.

Mr Bureta said they dedicated a whole day to cleaning their village compound, cutting and replanting trees. He added a group was assigned to work on their yaqona project.

The village committee chaired by the Director of Immigration, Nemani Vuniwaqa, had proposed that they invest in yaqona.

The five-year programme, he said, required them to plant 100,000 yaqona plants.

“We’ve started the project and our first harvest will be in 2020,” he said.

He said the Vuniwaqa-led committee had completed their three-year term and another committee would be in office next year.

Mr Bureta said the committee had bought a three-ton truck to ease the burden of transportation.

He said they were also preparing for Nasolo Day on December 26 where they hope to achieve a target of $95,000.

Money raised from the event will contribute to the development of the village. Mr Bureta is inviting those with blood ties to the village to be part of Nasolo Day and help raise funds.
