A number of garages that have been authorised to carry out vehicle fitness by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) are now under investigation for alleged corrupt practices.

The garages are believed to be from the Central Division.

Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) confirmed that there were a number of investigations ongoing involving garages/agents authorised to carry out inspections of vehicles. FICAC, has declined to comment further on the matter.

LTA’s chief executive officer, Samuel Simpson, said all matters had been referred to FICAC for investigation.

While he would not comment further on the ongoing investigation, he wanted to make it clear that corruption at any level would not be tolerated by the LTA.

“LTA does not tolerate corruption, not by its employees or its agents. If the public have information on corrupt practices in LTA, come to us and we will act,” he said. The outsourcing started in 2000 as the workload on LTA’s inspection centres was increasing, creating major backlogs.
