A 29-year-old admitted at the Lautoka Hospital denies any part in the cause of an explosion that took place in Ba last Saturday.

Ronald Ravi Kumar, a welder for Dayals Steel Pte Limited, said he was acting on the instruction of his foreman and plant manager, Pramod Kumar.

“In the morning we tested it and I found there was oil in it so we were draining the tank. As soon as I just did one spark from the top of the tank to test it, the tank exploded,” he said.

“I want to tell my side because now my superiors are blaming me but I was just following the orders of our foreman.”

He said he spoke with the second man, Fareed and they both agreed that the draining process was taking long.

“When it exploded, I shielded my face with my hand that’s why I wasn’t really affected but the other two really had serious burns even to the point where their clothes were burned off and all I could see after the explosion was Avinesh crawling on the ground,” he said.

Dayals Steels Pte Limited Managing Director Jay Dayal said Mr Kumar’s negligence played a role in the injury of two workers.

“The plant manager instructed them to clean the tank, what we gather is while they were cleaning the tank, he (Mr Kumar) did not wait and started welding. As soon as he started, within seconds the tank blew up because fuel was still inside,” he said.

“This welder has been warned several times because of his playful attitude during working hours and this is a clear case of his being negligent.”

Mr Dayal confirmed that the third victim, Avinesh Gosai’s, condition was slightly improving in terms of recovery.

“All men will get compensation as per law and we have also notified the Workers Compensation Commission, Labour Department and OHS department.

“I must also commend the National Fire Authority for putting out the fire within minutes, avoiding it from spreading,” he said.
