Court Told attempted Murder Accused Had Died, Circumstances Not Clear

The case of Tevita Kapaiwai, who faces an attempted murder charge, was called at the Magistrates Court in Suva yesterday.

The case was called before Magistrate Waleen George yesterday.

Police Prosecutor Constable Walter Taito told the court that he was advised that the accused had died. Kapaiwai had allegedly taken his own life in Suva on December 19.

He told the court that the circumstances of Kapaiwai’s death were not clear at this stage, however, he told the court that the file would be sent to the Director of Public Prosecution for sanctioning.

Kapaiwai, 45, who allegedly stabbed his ex-wife in Fulaga Street, Samabula, earlier this month, was remanded in custody by the Magistrates Court on December 18.

He was charged with one count each of attempted murder, of aggravated robbery and of criminal intimidation.

The alleged incident of attempted murder occurred on the evening of December 3, this year.

Kapaiwai was alleged to have stabbed the 43-year-old complainant, with a long silver blade brown wooden handled kitchen knife several times on her body.

The case was adjourned to January 13 for mention.
