The Fiji Sugar Corporation crushed a total of 1,806,379 tonnes of sugar cane this year, which was six percent higher than last year.

Harvesting was better managed in 2019 and a decrease of 44 percent in standover cane was achieved.

The sugar made of 168,702 tonnes is five per cent higher than last year.

Rainfall during the harvest season resulted in a 39 per cent increase in outside stops compared to 2018, especially at Labasa, which recorded 58 per cent more rain related cane stops in comparison to last year.

The Inside stops on the other hand were 17 percent lower than last year reflecting better operational efficiency at all three mills.

The commissioning of the Refurbished Rarawai boiler at the beginning of the season, and the 12 MW TG set at Lautoka were included in the recording of the factory stops, but both projects contributed positively during the year.

Sugar content deteriorated this year by two per cent in comparison to last year.

Rainfall, during cane ripening, temperature differences and low sunshine hours, were identified as major contributors to the decline.

High extraneous matter in cane and a high percentage of burnt cane crushed also affected sugar recoveries.

Lautoka Mill

Lautoka Mill concluded the 2019 crushing season on the December 15, 2019.

The total cane crushed was 657,184 tonnes which was eight per cent higher than last year.

The sugar made of 58,439 was only one per cent higher than last year, directly associated with a 17 per cent decline in sucrose content.

The operating time efficiency of the mill was three per cent lower than last year and, but the inside stops were eight per cent lower as the mill operated more consistently.

Outside stops were mainly caused by cane supply stops after rain.

The percent extraneous matter in cane remained high throughout this year recording 18 per cent on cane.

The percent of burnt cane contributed significantly to a reduction in boiling house efficiencies.

Rarawai Mill

In total Rarawai crushed 487,279 tonnes of cane for this year.

The cane crushed was five per cent higher than last year’s crush and, the sugar make of 44,830 is 18 per cent higher than last year.

The performance of the mill improved with lower mill stoppages, recording 11 per cent better operating time efficiency with the improved performance of the boiler.

Cane quality was marginally higher than last year, however the sugar content in cane was 10 per cent less than expected for the season.

The decline in sucrose is associated with unfavorable weather patterns.

Total burnt cane percent of crush was 64 per cent which also reduced sugar recovery.

The percent extraneous matter in cane was above 18 per cent which further depressed sugar recovery which ended six per cent lower than the expected.

Labasa Mill

Labasa mill crushed 661,916 tonnes cane which was seven per cent more than last year.

The mill produced 65,433 tonnes of sugar.

The sugar make was impacted negatively by a 10 per cent lower sugar content in cane in comparison to expectations for the season.

Burnt cane of 33 percent and the 15 per cent extraneous matter in cane further impacted on the sugar recovery which was five percent lower than expected.

Labasa mill managed to achieve one per cent better operating time efficiency in comparison to last year as the mill recorded 40 percent lower inside stops in the season.

The outside stops on the other hand were 40 per cent higher than last year, of which 41 per cent stops was due to rain.
