Kelera Drakece, who is from Wainunu in Bua, Vanua Levu, was one of many women in the country who gave birth to healthy babies yesterday.

Ms Drakece’s new-born baby girl weighed 3.2 kilograms at birth at the Makoi Maternity Unit in Makoi, Nasinu.

The baby was born at 8.35am and is the second child in Ms Drakece’s family.

Her eldest is a two-year-old boy. Ms Drakece’s husband was in Bua, Vanua Levu, and was made aware of the birth of his daugh­ter.

The unit in Makoi, since its full operation in September 2018, has recorded, as of yesterday, a total of 486 births.

Christmas came on time for two women at the Lautoka Hospital yesterday.

Reshma Devi, 26, of Tauvegave­ga, Ba, and Sereima Nainoka, 25, of Yaqeta, Yasawa, are each shar­ing their Christmas joy with their newly-born babies.

Both women gave birth to their babies at 1.20am.

For Ms Nainoka, she gave birth to her second daughter.

“We have yet to name her,” she said.

“I had hoped that it would be a boy, but all in all I am happy to have her as a new member of the family. My due date was December 24 and did not expect a Christmas Day birthday,” he said.

Her baby girl weighed 4.16 kilo­grams at birth.

Ms Devi, a housewife, gave birth to her first son, and third child in the family.

“He is my ‘Santa Claus’ I have wanted a baby boy for a long time. Finally my wait is over,” she said.

Her baby weighed 2.94 kg.

In Makoi, Nasinu, a 23-year-old mother is blessed to have her daughter born on Christmas Day.
