The National Disaster Management Office has activated Emergency Operation Centers (EOC) in anticipation of the tropical depression that continues to intensify.

Director NDMO, Ms. Vasiti Soko, while briefing the media this afternoon says the authorities are closely monitoring the situation as the 4 divisional EOC will start operating by this afternoon.

“We are asking the members of the public to take precautions and adhere to advisories issued by the authorities. Please know your emergency disaster plan, include persons living with disabilities and children in your disaster plan,” Ms. Soko said.

She adds that those living in low lying areas should already identify their emergency evacuation routes and evacuation centers.

“Listen for emergency instructions, check all family members are present, watch for rapidly rising flood water, store drinking water in sealed plastic containers (water supply may be interrupted), move livestock to higher ground, move households items to higher levels, evacuate if necessary when it is safe to do so, turn off electricity at the main switch before evacuating” said Soko.

Meanwhile all evacuation centers are ready and will be activated should the need arise. “We are working closely with the four Divisional Commissioners.

As of this afternoon, the Permanent Secretary for NDMO has activated the four Divisional Emergency Operation Centre that will start operating by this afternoon” said Soko.

Soko adds that the NDMO is working closely with the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji to monitor movement of vessels in the maritime areas while Fiji Airways has issued a statement advising the public that they have cancelled a flight from Nadi to Funafuti and Funafuti to Nadi.

In preparation, members of the public are advised to know their emergency contacts, their nearest evacuation center and have a Family Emergency Kit ready should the need to evacuate arise.

Motorists and pedestrians are strongly advised against crossing flooded roads and footpaths.
