Energy Fiji Working On Restoring Power Supply

Tropical Cyclone (TC) Sarai brought with it strong winds & rain across the Fiji Group.

Rains helped with the inflows into the Monasavu & Nadarivatu Hydro Dams.

Strong winds caused damages to the electricity infrastructure, especially on the overhead lines (conductors), cross arms and other associated accessories.

Power Supply to entire Viti Levu was affected and this meant that every metre of the power line has to be physically inspected, repaired where required, before it can be energised.

Whilst this process is time consuming, it is none-the less critical to ensure the safety and security of power supply.

In order to energise the entire EFL reticulation/network, EFL teams need to inspect the following:

• Over 10,500 km of power network

• Over 102,000 concrete and wooden poles including steel lattice towers

The EFL Cyclone Action Plan clearly identifies the critical areas for power restoration as follows:

• Hospitals & Major Health Centres

• Water & Sewerage Treatment Plants

• Towns, Cities & Industrial Areas

• Residential Areas

EFL teams at the various locations worked throughout Friday night to re-energising the network as the weather permitted.

Fine weather in most parts of the country on Saturday 28th December, 2019 allowed for swift restoration.
