Creating Music Out Of Waste

The ‘Lami Qiri Kava boys’ were the centre of attraction in Nadi town and at the Denarau Marina on Friday creating beautiful drum beats out of waste materials.
About 19 boys from Lami attracted tourists and locals with the sound of their drum beats and dance moves.
Group leader Mosese Ulunavitikoro said: “The purpose of our entertainment is to bring back the iTaukei tradition and culture in celebrating a new year of beating drums or biscuit tins with dancing to the beat.”
He said Lami was known as the rubbish dump area but they wanted to use that rubbish to create a beautiful melody.
“We don’t use any electronic music instruments. We collect rubbish, which consists of old torn buckets, empty tin biscuits, and empty gas cylinders.
“We practise using these items and it brings out a beautiful sound. It also gives us the idea that whatever people regarded as rubbish and useless, we can create something beautiful out of it,” he said.
Mr Uluinavitikoro said four students were also part of the group. They planned to assist them with their school items through the donations they received from entertaining around the country.
