Farmer On Bail For Alleged Abduction Of Girl, 17

A 28-year-old farmer charged with abducting a student has been granted bail by the Magistrates Court in Nausori.

The accused appeared before Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne, charged with one count of abduction and of defilement. It is alleged that the accused eloped with the 17-year-old student on the day she was missing from home on December 31, 2019. It is alleged that the farmer met the complainant and took her to his brother’s place in Nasinu and stayed with her.

The complainant was reported missing by the village headman on January 1, at the Korovou Police Station. During the search by Police, they found the girl staying with the accused, who was subsequently arrested.

Magistrate Somaratne granted bail to the accused with a bail bond of $500 and sureties bail bond of $500 each. The farmer was ordered not to reoffend and not to interfere with the prosecution witnesses.

The matter was adjourned for mention on February 3, in the Magistrates Court in Tailevu.
