Algar Highlights Source Of Litter Woes

Nasinu and Nausori special administrators team chair, Elizabeth Algar, says that debris created by Cyclone Sarai and the non-sorting of green waste, household goods and kitchen waste by residents have aggravated the litter situation in Nasinu.
The non-collection of garbage has been highlighted in the Nasinu municipality because of rubbish on the sides of streets.
Ms Algar said they were undergoing collection drives and had a set plan to do so.
“There is no need to revise the collection schedule,” she said.
“The special clean-up campaign which revises solid waste management services ensures that service delivery is sustainable and eliminates all solid waste piled along roadways and open spaces.
“This campaign will allow us to tell ratepayers and residents of the 1924 informal settlements in this corridor of their roles, to take ownership of community roles.
“This is a collaborative approach to ensure waste management is sustainable long term.”
Some headway has been made by Nasinu Town Council in removing the mess along the streets.
However, the fault in this situation goes both ways. The municipal council cannot stick to its schedule as residents pileup rubbish on street sides.
The special clean-up campaign for Nasinu comprises 10 phases.
“We have completed two phases comprising Caubati, Ratu Dovi Road and Narere,” Ms Algar said.
“The remaining eight phases will cover the remaining five wards starting with Makoi, Muanikoso, Nadawa, Nadera, Kinoya, Laucala Beach, Valelevu and Kalabu. We encourage residents to practise good waste management practices at all times.”
