Commuters bound for Suva via Ratu Mara Road experienced some heavy traffic yesterday morning because the Water Authority of Fiji continued to work on a sewer trunk in Nabua.

There were fears over the weekend that the hole created on the road would not be fixed, and a major traffic situation would be created with the start of the school year.

There was traffic flow in two lanes. However, congestion was created by buses having to come into one of the lanes, because the hole was not totally filled up.

Sameer Shah, of Nasole, said he left early yesterday morning because the school year had started.

“Traffic had started to build just before the Nabua roundabout. Usually around 7.15am, it is smooth flowing around there. There was a delay and I reached work a little later,” he said.

Senirusi Lalokobau makes his way on a bus to Samabula six days a week.

“I have to go to work to earn my money. I hope WAF works in Nabua is completed because I get paid by the hour and if I reach work late, I lose out because my pay is cut,” he said.

WAF in a statement said it was working around the clock with Fiji Roads Authority to reinstate the road section along Nabua’s Ratu Mara Road which was dug up for WAF teams to carry out urgent repairs to a leaking sewer line.

The sewer line transports wastewater from Suva City and nearby areas to the Kinoya wastewater treatment plant.

“We are working closely with our valued partners FRA to get the job done as soon as possible and to reduce the inconvenience to Fijians,” the statement said.

“The WAF thanks the travelling members of the public for their patience and apologises for the inconvenience caused.”
