Former England 7s international Ben Gollings says the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s team needs to bounce back in the Hamilton-Sydney leg of the 2019-20 World Sevens Series.

He is in the country as one of the guests of the 2020 McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s.

He said Fiji cannot be ruled out despite underperforming in Dubai and Cape Town.

“I think being the Olympic year it is always a bit different. The countries are always testing their players. I don’t think it is necessary to have an exact recipe to balance things,” he said.

“I don’t think that you have to look at all the game performances. I was at Dubai and Cape Town and it was really interesting to see from the pitch side as games are really close. But I think from the Fijian perspective they will probably bounce back in the next two tournaments.

“I think the boys always know that in their hearts that they did not perform but I’m sure that they will perform.”

He added teams like New Zealand, South Africa are expected to continue to build momentum in Hamilton and Sydney.

“New Zealand is looking pretty good and they have a pretty strong squad,”he said.

“South Africa too but they may probably change because they will lose some to Super Rugby boys. But certainly, they were flying in the first two tournaments.

“I think it is going to be a great year, it is going to be competitive and with the Olympics it will be wide open,” said Gollings.

Fiji is the defending Olympic gold medal champion after its historic victory at the 2016 Rio Games.
