Owners of Natuvu Jetty in Vanua Levu want it closed for operations on Saturdays.

Yesterday Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) Manager Qualifications and Licensing Captain Tomasi Kete in a statement said that effective from January 1, 2020 Natuvu Jetty will remain closed on Saturdays.

“All ship owners, agents, manning agencies, ship masters and seafarers effective from January 1, the property owners of Natuvu Jetty of Vanua Levu have advised that the jetty will remain closed on Saturdays,” Captain Kete said.

Property owner is the Mission at Natuvu Creek a non-denominational faith-based non-profit organisation.

The Mission at Natuvu Creek offers an expanding array of medical services, health and wellness education, development of jobs and grass-roots industries, engineering, and assistance with education from pre-kindergarten through high school.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Jone Usamate has confirmed that Government is progressing towards looking at two alternate sites in Cakaudrove.

“Government is progressing towards looking at two alternate sites in Cakaudrove. We hope to come up with a new jetty site soon,” he said.

Goundar Shipping Limited operates two runs between Natuvu and Taveuni daily while Labasa based Suncity Ferry Services operates every day conveying passengers from Labasa to Taveuni via Natuvu.

Meanwhile Vunikura in Cakaudrove was surveyed by Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) and the Maritime Safety Authority for a new jetty a few years ago.

The important issue in finding new sites is the safety of the people; negotiation for the project has been on-going the past few years.
