Suva City Council To Replace Damaged Coverings

The Suva City Council is doing work at the Suva City Market to ensure that there are no more tarpaulin structures erected by vendors.
The SCC is concerned that tarpaulin structures and sheds do not adhere to the safety standards set by the biggest municipality in the country.
Suva and Lami special administrator team chair, Isikeli Tikoduadua, said the city market was a key element of the municipal council’s business.
“The Suva City Council is currently engaged in replacing damaged coverings or shelter at the Suva Municipal Market. The structures in the extended areas were constructed five years ago and the coverings are now due for replacement,” Mr Tikoduadua said.
“The council will be carrying out works in stages and work is expected to be completed in three weeks.
“It is expected that the works shall create a friendlier and more convenient environment for farmers to sell their produce in. During the process of replacement, some open areas will be properly covered to ensure that no temporary tarpaulin structures are allowed to be erected by market vendors.”
Mr Tikoduadua said the city market had a high demand for vendor space and the council was working hard to accommodate vendors within the market trading zone.
According to the council records, high activity days remain at the end of the week – on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
