A Nasinu resident believes that the Nasinu Town Council’s failure to clean waterways at Laucala Beach Estate is causing compounds to flood during heavy rain.

Bal Krishna, 70, said the waterways which were between the industrial area in Nokonoko Road and Vere Road used to be cleaned regularly when the Nasinu Town Council used to handle its own work.

“For more than a year, the work for cleaning the waterways by removing the plant growth in the waterways has not been done,” Mr Krishna said.

“I have made more than 20 complaints and I have been told that this work has been given to a contractor.

“And because the waterways are not clear, it floods. Water reaches up to our doorsteps. Our homes are bit high. When we walk into our compound during these times, the water reaches higher than our knees.”

A resident of the area for almost 50 years, Mr Krishna said before the industrial area next to the Bailey Bridge was built, the area was a river.

He said all that was covered when the industrial area was made.

“When Nasinu Town Council used to clean the drains, everything was fine.” he said.

“The neighbourhood got together last week to clean part of the drain.”

Nasinu Town Council said it would be looking into the issue as it hoped to make a turnaround in service delivery to its residents..
