A young man’s plan to build his home upon his return to Fiji has been crushed after he died in a road accident in the Cook Islands on Monday.

Amit Kumar, 28, was working in the Cook Islands for Cook Island Steel for seven years. Mr Kumar was from Nadi.

He is the second youngest of five siblings. His elder brother, Raju Kumar, said Amit had called on Sunday saying he had signed a five-year work contract and was also planning to come to Fiji to build his own house.

“We all spoke to him, telling him that we were looking forward to his visit,” Mr Kumar said.

“When we received the news of his death, we were shocked. My mother fainted after hearing the news.

“My brother is a hard-working person and loves everyone. When he calls, he will want to speak to all the family members. We really missed him so much,” Mr Kumar said tearfully.

According to Cook Island News two bikes had collided on the main road.

Amit was killed alongside a 16-year-old local boy who was riding the other motorbike.

One of the motorbikes had pulled out to overtake a car with public health workers in it – and had hit the bike coming the other way. The two drivers died at the scene.

Meanwhile, funeral arrangements will be finalised as the family await the post-mortem examination results.

The body will be flown to the country where the final rites will be done, the elder brother said.
