Suva Will Host Hibiscus Festival This Year

Suva missed out on the Hibiscus Festival last year. That will not be the case this year, says the Suva City Council.

Suva and Lami special administrator chair Isikeli Tikoduadua said the SCC had taken the task to ensure that the Hibiscus would take place this year.

“This year will also mark 50 years of Fiji’s Independence and it is very important that we hold the Hibiscus Festival this year,” Mr Tikoduadua said.

“The SCC is now strongly leading the organisation of the festival. We have had talks with Suva Retailers Association and we have ensured that the festival happens.

“Last year, a lot of people were disappointed.”

The Hibiscus Festival traditionally takes place in the second term school break and for years has been the reason for attracting a large crowd to Suva during this period.

However, with the Independence Day celebrations, this year’s festival could most possibly feature in October. It would make a perfect finale because October 10 falls on a Saturday.

Mr Tikoduadua said this was being considered. He said the Hibiscus Festival would also break away from being heavily commercialised and focus more on culture and tradition.

He said this was how the Hibiscus Festival used to be.

Mr Tikoduadua said the festival this year would see the return of themes to promote what Fiji was all about.
