The new solar-powered freezer for Nairai Island will be a big boost for the fishers, said district representative, Manasa Colatanavosa.

With five villages on the island and many relying on the sea as a source of income, Mr Colatanavosa said their catch would last longer there.

The freezer, he said, was given by the Ministry of Fisheries and the minister, Semi Koroilavesau, will to be commissioning it.

Mr Colatanavosa said: “We thank this caring FijiFirst Government for all the help it is giving to all the villages in Nairai.”

He said the fishers’ main market was Gau Island. A bundle of fish can fetch up to $20 on the island. Often, he said, there was not enough fish for the consumers in Gau.

Village happenings

Meanwhile, Natauloa villagers have sought help from the Water Authority of Fiji to repair their new water source.

Mr Colatanavosa said they had just completed their new reservoir but there were some cracks appearing that they needed experts from WAF to check.

At Waitoga Village, they were doing fundraising for their new church.
