A 50-year-old self-employed man, who is alleged to have raped a 27-year-old woman, has been told to apply for bail at the High Court.

Abdul Mohammed Sameem, also known as Sam, appeared before Magistrate Asanga Bodaragama yesterday.

He is charged with one count of rape.

It is alleged that the complainant was walking along Rewa Street in Suva at about 7am on February 11 when the accused who was travelling in a black car approached the complainant and offered to take her home and buy her food.

The accused then allegedly took her to his house and in his room where he allegedly forced her to drink liquor with him, but the complainant refused to do so.

The accused then allegedly threatened her to take off her clothes and later allegedly punched her whereby the complainant then removed all her clothes.

The accused is, then, alleged to have raped the complainant.

The complainant then ran outside the house and screamed out for help and reported the matter to the Raiwaqa Police Station.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Monish Chandra served the accused with full phase of disclosures and told the court that the accused and the complainant were not related.

Magistrate Bodaragama transferred the matter to the High Court in Suva because the offence was indictable.

He ordered the accused to file a notice of alibi, if any, within 21 days from yesterday.

Sameem has been remanded in custody and the matter will be called at the High Court on February 27.
