A 70-year-old woman is admitted at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWM) after a fire badly damaged their family home in Rifle Range Vatuwaqa yesterday morning.

Anna Chow is now recovering in hospital after inhaling smoke from the fire.

Ms Chow’s granddaughter, Corrina, 25, said she was woken up by her grandmother at around 1am.

“My grandmother was knocking on my door and shouting. At first, I thought she was shouting at my cousin,” she said.

“When I opened the door, she said there was a fire from the back of the house, on the top floor.”

She believes the fire started from the decking at the back of the house, on the top floor.

The family is now sheltering with a neighbour, Mahend Prasad. Mr Prasad said they were drinking yaqona when they learned about the fire.

The National Fire Authority said they received a call at around 1am. When they reached the scene, the top floor of the house was fully engulfed.

Firefighters managed to control the fire from spreading to the bottom floor.
