Navua Hospital has an isolation unit that has been equipped and will be fully operational by week’s end as the coronavirus watch intensifies.

Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete,  said the isolation unit had been part of the hospital since it was built.

He said they were getting prepared as part of further proactive and preventative measures Government was taking. Similar preparations were happening in other divisions, he said.

The steps, he said, were guided by the World Health Organisation and similar preventative measures were being undertaken around the world.

He made it very clear that patients were not being moved to the old Navua Hospital as rumoured. He said all Government facilities were being looked at.

He dispelled rumours that Navua Hospital was being prepared for COVID-19-positive foreign nationals on their way here.

He said the policy still remained that no foreign national would be allowed into the country from China unless they had undergone the 14-day quarantine clearance.

He appealed to all Fijians to help combat misinformation by relying only on trusted sources of information on the virus.

As of yesterday, there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Fiji.

Meanwhile, people signed a petition in Navua yesterday opposing the use of the old Navua Hospital as a quarantine facility.
