Man In Custody For Allegedly Torching Home In Sigatoka

A 49-year-old man is in custody at the Sigatoka Police Station for his alleged involvement in a house fire, which destroyed a wooden partially concrete house in Nayawa sub-division, Sigatoka on Friday.

Police Spokesperson Savaira Tabua confirmed the incident and said it happened around 1 pm.

The man, who is a family member, is alleged to have poured petrol in the house before setting it on fire.

According to Police, there were two people in the house when the fire broke out. Two family members were away for work and visiting a family member in Suva.

Police also confirmed that there were ongoing disputes regarding homeownership.

However, during the incident, their poultry and livestock were not harmed. They were just five metres away from the completely destroyed house.

A neighbour, who spoke on the basis of anonymity, said they were alerted when someone shouted, “Fire, fire!”

“We ran outside by that time those two people inside the house had come outside. The heavy black smoke was there and the fire was fast, and it spread quickly. Lucky it did not spread to the other side of the homes,” he said.

National Fire Authority and Fiji Police investigations are underway.
