According to residents who were at the scene, the driver and the passenger were lucky that the vehicle did not plunge into the river.

Police Arrest Runaway Driver

The man believed to have been the driver of a vehicle, which was involved in an accident in Lami yesterday morning, has been arrested by police.

The man is in custody and is believed to be a former Fiji rep in athletics.

The vehicle, a grey Toyota Sai, was travelling towards Lami when it is believed the driver lost control of it and it hit the rails on the Wailada Bridge on Queens Road.

According to residents who were at the scene, the driver and the passenger were lucky that the vehicle did not plunge into the river.

Police spokesperson Savaira Tabua said the driver was allegedly intoxicated when the accident occurred. Lami taxi driver Mahend Singh said the driver and the passenger were lucky that the vehicle did not end up in the river.
