Attorney-General and Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum told Parliament that the xenophobia and paranoia of Opposition MP, Niko Nawaikula about expatriates is well known.

This was after Mr Nawaikula’s repeated attacks claiming the Government appoints foreigners over locals.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said that: “If Honorable Nawaikula’s is so afraid of foreign business, let’s shut down the tourism industry tomorrow.”

He made this comment while speaking on the debate on the review report on the Fiji Ports Corporation Limited 2016 Annual Report in Parliament yesterday.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said there were more local permanent secretaries because only four permanent secretaries from the 21 were from overseas.

The four Attorney-General was referring to were Bernadette Welch, Deborah Weiss, Joshua Wycliffe and Dimity Fifer.

“Three permanent secretaries have dual citizenship and they are Maretino Nemani, Sanjeeva Perera and Jennifer Poole.” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

If Mr Nawaikula was against expatriates, what about 7s rugby coaches Ben Ryan and Gareth Baber, said Mr Sayed-Khaiyum.

Mr Nawaikula claimed Government had been getting expatriates in the past 15 years and has killed the economy.

“Permanent secretaries are from overseas, private companies from overseas yet government does not trust the local,” he said.

“Fifteen years is too much for this Government and they should give up.”
