A Lautoka taxi driver yesterday claimed three women he believed to be sex workers tried to extort money from him.

In the first case of its type involving women, one of them allegedly held a knife to his neck and demanded cash.

Then they threatened him that they would report him to the Police Station that he tried to rape them.

Nikhil Shabneel Chand said it was a scary experience. He said he was just starting work and had no money.

The general secretary for the Fiji Taxi Association, Ashwin Lal, said this was the first case of its kind that he had come across.

He warned all taxi drivers to stay away from sex workers.

Mr Chand recalled that he had just started work in the morning when he picked up the women at Tavakubu.

He said they were scantily dressed and he knew they were sex workers by the way they talked.

“As I was driving, one of the women sitting at the back, held a knife to my neck and asked for money but I didn’t have any because I just started for the day.

“As I drove past the bus shelter opposite Lautoka Methodist School, they told me to stop. They said if I didn’t give them money, they would go to the Police and lodge a report that I raped them,” he said.

He told them he had no money because he had just started work.

The women then got out of the car and disappeared. Mr Lal said this was the first time an issue as such was brought to their attention.

“No issue like this has been raised in any of our board meetings,” said Mr Lal.

“Stay away from sex workers. If you encounter a similar problem, just drive them to the nearest Police station to avoid any problem.”

Mr Chand has reported the matter at the Tavakubu Police Station. Police are investigating.
