South Island Ships Put In Tighter Security Measures After Drug Bust
MV Liahona II

South Island Shipping Limited has put in tighter security measures following the arrest of 12 crew members and captain of one of their vessel allegedly found with $50,000 marijuana in their possession on its return trip from Kadavu last week.

“The ship has nothing to do with those involved with the alleged drug case,” Liahona II owner Ulaiasi Baivatu said.

“That is a separate issue between the individual and the authorities. It has nothing to do with the vessel,” he said.

“Just like anybody they do the crime, they have to face the time.

“It is unfortunate that so many allegedly got dragged into this. The law needs to take its cause. There is no one above the law.

“We had a good sit down with all staff members and they know how serious we are about incidents like this. We have told everyone if they are suspicious of any activity onboard come forward or everyone will unfortunately like this case go down with it.

“We don’t entertain any illegal activity. Unfortunately, we had to wait until the 13 men were let out on bail then were we able to send our vessel to Kadavu on Thursday.”

“I addressed my team and reminded them that they are the frontline of this company. Our passengers need to feel safe again. We have a reputation to keep and now we will work hard to get it back.”
