The focus of the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s team are to get to where they were at this time last year.

This was the gist of head coach Gareth Baber’s message heading into this weekend’s Los Angeles Sevens at the Dignity Health and Sports Park.

“Our biggest challenge is getting back to where we were last season, where we created momentum in the way we were playing and were able to put our performances together,” he said.

Baber said it’s crucial for them as defending series champions to win in L.A. and improve their fifth standing on the series points table.

He retained the same squad from the team that won the Sydney Sevens in Australia, earlier this month with forward Suliano Volivoli being the new inclusion.

The Welshman highlighted he was impressed with the talents on display and personally penciling the raw talents that are on offer.

NEW TOURNAMENT

“Sport is about momentum, sometimes you have it and sometimes you don’t.

“Now we go to L.A. and it’s a new tournament for us.”

Baber said that was the reason for their early departure to give them to acclimatise and get used to what is happening in L.A.

“Then obviously the focus is getting our performance up.”

He added their preparation has been good so far as they take on Australia in a warm-up game today.

“We came back from Sydney assessed the players and saw if the players had any injuries that we had to go over.

“Training went very well at Pacific Harbour with the boys during the two weeks we had.”
