A man, who stole green yaqona plants valued at $1200, has been sentenced to six months imprisonment.

Suliano Nasalu, charged with one count of theft, appeared before Magistrate Bimsara Jagodage at the Magistrates Court in Labasa yesterday.

While sentencing Suliano, Magistrate Jagodage said: “The offence you committed is prevalent and serious in rural communities nowadays. The community denounces such acts, as you chose to earn quick money through short cuts, which is unacceptable.”

Police Prosecutor Corpora Vignesh Prasad told the court that on January 18, 2020, at Nasolo Village in Bua, Suliano uprooted five four-year-old yaqona plants, belonging to Setareki Reaika, who was admitted at the Labasa Hospital.

The matter was reported to Police and inquiries led to the discovery of $200 worth of dried yaqona, including roots and stem, from Nasalu’s house.

Nasalu represented himself and pleaded guilty on his free will.

Magistrate Jagodage said a suspended term was not justified in this case.
