Government’s commitment towards nurses was reaffirmed yesterday as the Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete, and the nurses from the Rewa subdivision, marked the Year for Nurses and Midwives.

Held at Nausori Primary School, the day started with a health walk.

Dr Waqainabete took a stroll down memory lane as he gave accounts of his first contacts with nurses.

He said the nurses made it possible for the ministry to successfully carry out their measles campaign.

“We really value the works you nurses have done. We are also much better as a group in terms of nursing than we were ever before,” he said.

“I look forward to the graduation in April this year as more nurses would coming to join the work force and be able to support the work that we do.”

Dr Waqainabete also reminded the nurses that they needed to look after themselves and their health.

“We are not superhuman or angels that we live forever. A day will come when we will become sick and die. It is incumbent on us that we look after ourselves,” he said.,

A retired nurse with 39 years of experience, Mereani Waqa, said when she started nursing things were difficult.

She said she was grateful to see changes being implemented by the Government to enhance the skills of nurses and assist with equipment.

The day was rounded off with a Zumba class and nurses from the subdivision were happy to take part.

Almost 200 nurses are in the Rewa subdivision deployed in hospitals, clinics and other public outreach programmes.
