Fijian light heavyweight champion Savenaca Naliva is now after the World Boxing Union (WBU) world title.

The Sorokoba, Ba native made his intention known after he stopped John Korake of Papua New Guinea in the second round to claim the World Boxing Foundation Asia Pacific and the Pro Box Pacific titles at AD Patel College ground in Ba on Saturday night.

Fighting in front of his fans Naliva was a class above Korake with his lightning counter punches that had the PNG champion hit the canvas midway in the second round.

Australian referee Justin Kennedy had to step in and stop the fight as Korake was not in a state to continue.

“I wanted the fight to go the 10 rounds so my fans can watch but my opponent could not withstand my punches,” Naliva said.

“He is a champion of PNG but after the first round I decided to come out attacking instead of allowing him to settle down.”

Naliva thanked his sponsors and the big turnout of fans to support him.

“It’s after 21 years and finally boxing is happening in Ba. I’e more fights lined-up and will focus on it. I want to win more titles.”

Naliva takes on Adrian Taihia for the WBU title in Auckland, New Zealand on April 18.

South Pacific Boxing Promotions promoter Freddy Chand said the event was a successful one and the people of Ba deserved the best.
