The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission has taken action on a case where a student is allegedly being taunted in school because his father is incarcerated.

Commission director, Ashwin Raj, said this at an event where he was talking with residents of an informal settlement in Lami.

Mr Raj said they have talked to the complainant’s mother and is speaking to relevant authorities.

“We must teach our children values of acceptance and mutual respect of the diverse backgrounds that we come from,” Mr Raj said.

“Some children may come from economically disadvantaged background; others may come from a background where there is violence at home or some may come from a background where there is a single parent.”

“Let’s teach our children to learn to respect the diverse backgrounds that they all come from, that there’s nothing to be ashamed about, that in the classroom everyone is equal,” he added.

Look past our race

Meanwhile, at the informal settlement, Mr Raj said we must look past our race, our differences and political standings, and work towards a better Fiji for all Fijians.

“When it comes to right of settlement there is a race angle. When it comes to environment there is a race angle. When it comes to economic participation there is a race angle… we must look past that and embrace unity,” Mr Raj said.

“It does not matter that this individual is an iTaukei or Indo- Fijian, we both feel hungry. We must stand united as we ask these questions, despite our political difference.”
