A Papua New Guinea investor is behind moves to reopen Mount Kasi gold mine in Cakaudrove Province, Vanua Levu.
Tui Wailevu’s advisor Laitia Matalomani confirmed this yesterday.
“The vanua of Wailevu has agreed to have this gold mine operation reopened by next month,” Mr Matalomani said.
“We have done the necessary paperwork with relevant authorities in ensuring that we follow the right procedures in reopening the mine.”
He said the gold mine was four kilometres northeast of Dawara village, 40 kilometres west of Savusavu.
Mount Kasi was once a thriving gold mine and it has been closed for many years.
